Sure, I've gotten the same advice as
everyone else over the years not to talk about politics or religion, but what fun would that be?
As a U.S. citizen, I think there are some pretty serious issues involving our Constitution
and the way our government does business. I have specific thoughts on School Prayer, Faith-Based Government-Funded Institutions of ANY kind, and so forth.
It takes discussion and debate
to get to the heart of those issues, so there are times and places when we should get them out into the open.
We have an obligation
as citizens to speak up or never be heard, allowing others to control our very
lives.
A little about me...
I was born in 1959, so
I turned 50 in May. I was raised in a Christian family and sent to
parochial schools throughout my formative years, where I studied the
Bible pretty much every day. I started an acolyte program in my
church that has endured some 30 years now. I was the first Boy
Scout in my troop to get a religious merit badge. During my early
years, I wanted to be a pastor.
I was a devout believer until my late teens, when I began to have some
doubts as a result of questions my ministers, teachers and parents had
only ridiculous answers to. I dug in on my own and pressed on
through a journey that has been ongoing for about the last 35+ years in
search of the truth. I was diagnosed with an incurable cancer in
2001, nearly died, and never feared my pending death, nor appealed to
the god of my devout and fanciful youth in any way.
The result of these and surrounding factors are that I have no choice
but to say that I am an atheist. It is the only way for me to
honor those things I hold as important; Truth, honesty, morality and
integrity. My conscience is clear and healthy as a result, and my
humanity and creativity have reached new heights.
It is my hope that those
of you who do not agree with me may still respect me, my views and my
choices. In turn, I shall do my best to respect you and yours.
After all, we're all stuck in this world together. Let's try to
coexist peacefully.
